Piet MONDRIAN
04 July 2020
Description

acrylic on paper size 70x70cm = 27.5x27.5", framed with glass appears to be a reproduction of Mondrian's Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow, 1930, Kunsthaus Zürich.

Provenance

We bought this on a garage sale in Malaysia of a wealthy Swiss manager who returned to Europe. Initially we thought it was just a poster of Mondrian's famous artwork, however upon closer inspection it is an actual painting and even signed P M 30 and we suspect it might actually be an original it has been framed in Basel the condition is very good upon request we may unframe it for further inspection of the backside and edges

What does this mean?

Hello Ralph,

Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. I very much apologize for the delay in your appraisal and I am grateful for your patience. The item presented appears to be an acrylic painting on paper (possibly a serigraph on paper featuring the image of Piet Mondrian's (Dutch, 1872 –1944) oil on canvas titled "Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow," 1930. The original 45 x 45 cm oil painting is held in the permanent collection of Kunsthaus Zürich.

The auction market has seen several serigraphs of this work with the similar overlaps of colors and deviations of line from the oil painting. These serigraphs also include the "PM 30" signature and are offered in many dimensions, including 70 x 70 cm. Serigraphs or screen prints use ink very similar to acrylic paint and are often mistaken for each other.

If you'd like to consider authentication of the object, I would encourage it very much. Mearto offers authentication services. You can find out more on the Authenticate page (https://mearto.com/authenticate). However, after a brief search, I was able to find out that Mondrian did paint two examples of this composition, both in 1930 and both oil on canvas. One is located in Zurich, as mentioned. The other is held in a private collection and measures 51 x 51 cm.

The estimates provided below are based on recent auction estimates and results of this composition designed by Piet Mondrian. In today's secondary market, this item as a serigraph would reach a fair market estimate of $100 - 400. However, if further examination (typically outside the frame during the authentication process) reveals the object is indeed a painting by the hand of Mondrian, the estimate would reach up to $10,000,000 - 20,000,000. However, copy paintings after Mondrian's compositions reach an estimate of $100 - 1,000. Please note that asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.

This is a conditional appraisal, which means that we have not verified the authenticity of this item. Click here to learn more about the authentication resources that Mearto offers.
