The case is made of white marble and brass or bronze castings that were gilded with gold. The technique for the gilding was probably “flame gilding” which would have been applied as a mercury and gold amalgam and then heated to evaporate the mercury. A lot of the gold has worn off but there is still some left. The detail that helps to authenticate the date estimate is the Brocot regulator. The Brocot company sold their business,I believe in 1885 another company called Thiebles so after that date the Brocot logo on the suspension adjustment wheel would have been replaced with the new company’s name.
