Oil painting. Wood frame, not completely sure. I inherited this along with some other very nice items from Tiffany’s along with some China and silver from my father’s sister’s estate in Virginia. My great grandfather was Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy‘s private doctor in Manhattan. He was married with two children, but had an affair with a famous Guggenheim. Apparently they were in love and at one point she offered my grandmother a very large sum of money if she would grant my grandfather a divorce, she would not. I’m not sure where this piece came from but I know that they were very wealthy and we’re always having dinner parties with very well to do people and other doctors and their wives as well.

Hello, this item is a large oil painting on canvas depicting a young child standing beside a small dog, presented in an ornate carved and gilded wooden frame. Based on stylistic analysis, handling of paint, costume details, and overall composition, this portrait dates to the late 18th or early 19th century, most likely between circa 1790 and 1830. The treatment of the child’s face, the softly modeled flesh tones, the high waisted white dress with sash, and the restrained interior setting are consistent with Anglo American or Continental European portraiture of this period. The painting is unsigned, which is common for provincial or workshop based portrait artists, and there is no visual evidence to support attribution to a major academic master. The frame appears period appropriate or slightly later, and complements the painting without indicating a modern pairing.
The painting appears to be in fair to good condition, with visible surface wear, an aged varnish layer, and minor abrasions consistent with age. There are no obvious large scale losses or structural canvas damage visible in the provided images, although professional cleaning and conservation would likely improve tonal balance and clarity. Comparable unsigned late 18th or early 19th century child portraits of this scale and quality typically sell on the secondary market between $2,000.00 and $4,000.00 USD, depending on condition, subject appeal, and decorative presence.
