I am seeking an appraisal for what I believe to be a 20th-century Steiff teddy bear. The bear features glass eyes and clear evidence of hand stitching on the back of the bear. It is fully jointed with five movable joints, each containing what appear to be internal discs typical of traditional construction. The nose is stitched in a style characteristic of classic Steiff bears, and there is a pronounced hump on the upper back. Upon examining the stuffing, I found it to consist of coarse, brown cotton-like material. The outer fur appears to be mohair. Based on the overall condition and craftsmanship, I suspect the bear may have undergone some degree of restoration at some point in its life. The bear came dressed in clothing, which I will include in the photos. The garments appear to be handmade and likely added later; they also show signs of age. Although I have not been able to locate another bear with this exact shape and detailing, its features are consistent with those seen in vintage Steiff bears. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in identifying and valuing this piece. Thank you for your time and expertise.

Hi Amarin,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Yes, this looks like a Steiff bear and you are correct that this is made of mohair, with wood-wool batting for stuffing. It was probably made in the 1920s or 1930s and has suffered some fur losses throughout, including along his spine which appears to have been resewn.
A vintage Steiff bear of this size and vintage - in all original condition with age-expectant wear would usually bring between $300 and $500 at auction but with some repairs, it's worth less: $200-300.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique cinnamon mohair jointed teddy bear
attributed to Steiff, circa 1920-30
With glass eyes, sewn nose, mouth and claws, the jointed body with center seam; together with patterned cotton or muslin clothing. Lacking ear button.
22 inches overall height
CONDITION: With some fur losses commensurate to age and use; spine appears to have been resewn.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 200-300*
