Bought at a Los Angeles thrift store. It’s 12” tall, unglazed. Marks on the bottom including “10283-7” Some kind of kiln or potter mark above that. I have no idea if this old or modern- is it an old sake bottle? Who made this and when? People in all my Pottery collectors groups, Asian and Studio, are mystified.

Dear Laine,
Thank you for choosing Mearto for your online appraisal and for the patience.
Based on the images and available information, this item is:
A very rare Japanese 14th century (in-style) pottery ware that is dark bronze stoneware with a natural ash glaze. It most likely resembles the Bizen ware.
Bizen Ware is put in the kiln unglazed, but due to the effects of the 8 to 20-day pine wood firing, reaching temperatures of approximately 1250℃ (2282 F°), becomes naturally glazed with the pine ash or acquires various subdued colors.
Unfortunately there is no examples with this form or shape and as a result it’s exact provenance. Despite this, the resemble with 14th century Japanese ware is certain.
Very good condition

Hello - is there any way to know the artist/potter? What the numbers on the bottom mean?
Especially since Japan didn’t start using Arabic numerals until the 19th century, why would there be Arabic numbers on the bottom of this vase in the 14th century?
Hello. The number on the bottom means the order within a catalogue, most likely from the previous owner.
As there is no additional documents attached to this piece, it could be that this piece is indeed in style of 14th century but a late replica.
Hello any idea when this will be ready?
