Dear Framm Phillips,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is a gouache painting on paper after Cesare-Agostino Detti's (Italian, 1847-1914) "The Palm Reader." It's a genre painting of a tavern scene. The palm reader is pictured at the center, standing next to a bag of cards, and reading the palm of a man. The work is unsigned. From the images provided, the work appears to be in fair condition with discoloration to the surface, staining along the lower edge. A photograph of the verso shows significant water damage which may be the cause of the staining visible to the lower margin. It measures 21 x 17 inches in frame, and 15 x 11 inches unframed.
Detti was a prominent Italian painter, well-known for his genre scene compositions. There are a significant amount of copy paintings and reproductions of Detti's work on the secondary market. The oil painting copies sell much higher than their print or watercolor counterparts. For example, a 2022 sale reached a hammer price of $400. Many other sells around $100, and others pass. Considering these sales trends, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $0 and $200.
Thank you again for your submission.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
