What does this mean?

Dear Nick,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a basket hilt sword in the style of the 16th/ 17th century. This piece is a modern replica of the second half of the 20th century made in the city of Toledo in Spain which is famous for its knife and sword production. The hilt was made out of brass and the steel blade is etched with decor and a portrait of the Conquistador Hernan Cortes and this decor is filled with a colored paste.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 40 to 80 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
George
