What does this mean?

Hi Laurie,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

There is perhaps no more iconic American furniture form than the rocking chair; while the overall aesthetics have changed over time, the basic structure has remained consistent in the 200 years since the form was developed.

Because it's such an iconic form, there is no shortage of examples for collectors to acquire but with supply outpacing demand, prices -for even early 19th century examples - remains comparatively low for all but those forms with the most elite pedigree or history of ownership.

Original surface used to matter more to collectors than it does now so you haven't devalued this by having it refinished, with the vast majority of these selling for less than $500 today.

At auction, this would sell for between $150 and $250; this may be an instance where it has greater sentimental value than market value but I think it's important to be honest about what this is currently worth so you can make an educated decision if you are considering selling or insuring it.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Mission Style oak rocking armchair
unattributed American maker, circa 1900
