Yes Jonathan, this is an authentic Count Berthold von Imhoff painting. It would be my husband's grandfather's work. Imhoff lived in Reading PA and later emigrated to Canada. We are interested to know where this was found. We thank you so much for reaching out to us. My husband Berthold (Bert) is a grandson. His father Carl Imhoff was his youngest son. All of the family were born in USA. Sincerely Bert and Phyllis Imhoff

Dear Jonathan Pinckney,
Thank you for the appraisal submission and for providing additional images. The work is an oil painting on canvas by Count Berthold von Imhoff (German-Canadian, 1868-1939). The composition is a religious scene of Jesus Christ kneeling after Heinrich Hofmann's "Christ in Gethsemane." It is signed "B. Imhoff Reading" to the lower left corner. From the images provided, the painting appears to be in poor condition with stretcher marks to the margin, and tears and abrasions to the upper margin. It measures 27 x 24 inches in frame.
von Imhoff was born in Mannheim, Germany. He displayed artistic talents early on as a young child, and apprenticed as early as fourteen years old. von Imhoff's professional artistic practice was predominantly of Catholic imagery. He was commissioned to produce for cathedrals and private families. Despite his many productions, von Imhoff does not have a secondary market record. This makes the evaluation of the work more ambiguous, as there are no statistical sales records. Instead we consider the sales trends of religious paintings, specifically those of Christ in Gethsemane. With this information, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this painting between $200 and $500.
Thank you again for your submission.
