Leather wood with scrolls
29” 35” 35”
Hi John,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This chair was made in mid 19th Century (circa 1850s) England or America. It's broad proportions suggest it was made for a study or library rather than a sitting room or parlor.
The market for rocking chairs is and has been quite soft for years - I would be surprised to see this chair bring more than $150-200 at auction.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Victorian carved walnut rocking armchair
American or English, mid 19th Century
With curved crest continuing into scrolled arms flanking a tufted black leather back and black leather seat with brass tack trim, raised on short ball-and-claw front legs, all on rockers. Presumably unmarked.
35 inches high, 35 inches long, 29 inches wide
CONDITION: This chair is in fair condition with wear commensurate to age and use. It appears to retain its original metal coil springs and burlap strapping.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$150-200*
