What does this mean?

The appraised work appears to be a 1968 color screen print on silver foil executed by Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) titled “Merton of the Movies.” The print is pencil signed and editioned. The poster was created for the Minnesota Theatre Company and features the artist’s characteristic Ben Day dots. The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. The appraised work's size, composition, medium and condition (based on images provided), as well as the artist's current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.

hi there
from what I can see in auction resulsts, all the 450 editions are sold for 1500$-2400$ , don't you think the estimate is a bit low?
thank you!

I checked a wide range of auction sources before determining the valuation. Can you send the auction comps you are referring to?

Thanks!
Grace

Hi there and thank you for getting back to me. I have added 3 auction results, one of them is the exact print that I have, as you can see it comes 1500-2400 in average. Thank you!

Thanks for sending these. I would say with regard to the $2,400 sale back in 2014, that is not an accurate comparable given its age. We tend to go back no more than 5 years with regard to comparables, as anything older than 5 years is not an accurate barometer of the current market for a particular work and the artist’s market in general.

As far as the other 2, while they are within our 5 year period of examination, these are individual sales. We look at the overall market for a specific work and are looking at the average auction price. It could be where in these specific sales, the provenance of the print was particularly important (previous ownership), or perhaps there was simply a buyer who was willing to pay more and a bidding war occurred.

Based on our research, we estimate the average auction price for this particular print within a 5-year period to be approx. $1,050. Given this sum, we determined an appropriate FMV range based on the the criteria listed above. We stand by this estimate and feel it is accurate. I hope this answers your question(s).

Thanks!
Grace
