What does this mean?

Hello Marc,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Contemporary Ushak Carpet, dating back to the 1950-1970 period. Ushak Carpets are one of the most widely known Turkish Rugs of all. These pieces were a sign of prestige all over the world starting from the 15th century as Holbein and Lorenzo Lotto even painted them in several occasions. Ushak rugs are also categorized to referring these artists in particular but yours is a contemporary piece with a overall mixture of ancient and traditional motifs. Before teh 20th century Ushak pieces would always be knotted as wool on wool. So wool would be the only material of the piece but starting from the 20th century, as they became more and more commercial weavers used cotton material and many modern-contemporary pieces are knotted wool on cotton. Which gives the rug a thin physical form.

Your piece has a very ineteresting colour palette blending the motifs alongside their colours. This is also a somewhat modern colour palette since this tone of green was rarely used in early pieces. Contemporary Ushak rugs are a mix of the tribal Ushaks and court Ushaks. They do have large floral motifs and also geometrical motifs, lanterns ect. Your piece is a very large piece and it probably took at least 7 to 8 months to knot this if it was handled by two weavers. Contemporary pieces are usually smaller in size. The piece is in fair condition with signes of use and age alongside some ware to the fringes.
