Pure wool, hand knitted vintage rug bought from a rug dealer who, due to a personal tragedy, was selling off the last if just stock at the vintage market in Brighton Marina. He mentioned it was vintage « Russian » and said it was a very good buy. This was twenty years ago approximately. Since then I have looked after it and appreciated it’s unique colours and geometric style. There is some minor unravelling at either end in the fringe and a small pull near the middle.

Hello, this item is a hand knotted wool rug in a Caucasian geometric style, most closely associated with Azerbaijani or broader South Caucasus design traditions. The bold ivory field, strong primary palette of red, dark blue, and olive green, and the large hooked medallions with angular motifs reflect patterns commonly seen in Kazak and related Caucasian village carpets. However, the clarity of the dyes, the regularity of the knotting, and the presence of a sewn serial tag indicate this is not a 19th century Caucasian tribal rug but a later 20th century workshop production inspired by traditional Azerbaijani designs. The structure visible on the reverse suggests a commercial village or workshop weave rather than an early tribal example.
With dimensions of approximately 50 by 80 inches, this falls into the medium decorative room size category. Late 20th century Caucasian style rugs of this type typically sell in the secondary market between 400 USD and 900 USD depending on knot density, color harmony, and condition. Minor fringe unraveling and a small pull in the field slightly reduce value but do not significantly impact usability. A realistic current market value for this example would be in the range of 500 USD to 800 USD.
