I bought it in the USSR when I was a student but I don’t play any instrument. I liked it and dollar was incredibly strong back then. It’s wood.

Hi Lucia,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The most specifically "Russian" mandolin-type instrument is called the domra (домра) and is a round-backed, long-necked, plucked lute with three metal strings that were played with a plectrum, a flat pick (typically larger than ones used for guitars) that were worn on the thumb.
A more Western-style mandolin was a Neapolitan style one called a mandolina (мандолина), which has a teardrop shape, which have 4 pairs of strings (for a total of 8 strings); finally, the triangular-shaped Balalaika, which also has 3 strings.
You have the more Western/Neapolitan-style mandolina (мандолина), with vivid painted lacquer decoration on a black ground, which is characteristic of the Palekh school and which originated in the Ivanovo region, northeast of Moscow. This area was also a major center of Russian icon painting. This style of painting was banned during the Russian Revolution and evolved into miniature painting. Fortunately, during the Soviet era, the became a state-supported folk art and was widely exhibited, even internationally.
I'm not able to date this instrument from the photos but it was *probably* made during the mid 20th Century.
Similar examples of comparable age have been selling for relatively modest prices at auction lately; I can find several like mandolinas selling at auction recently, for prices in the $75-100 range. You may find a few similar instruments listed by private sellers or retailers priced at higher retail prices.
