Sword has the word "Tyson" stamped in the metal Tang. Dimensions: 27" length of blade; 4-1/2" guard; hilt height is 5" Decorative designs on both sides of blade. Decorative eagle or hawk (?) at the top of the hilt Do not know the metal (didn't want to clean it before contacting an appraiser). Could it be hand forged? My brother found this item 37 years ago cleaning out a crawlspace. We do not know its origin.

Dear Lauren,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be an M 1820 officers eagle head saber. The blade is decorated with blueing and gilding. Sadly the whole piece is in a very bad condition. The grip is missing and the blade is damaged and corroded. It is very heavy to find a collector who is willing to pay much for this interesting saber which is in a very bad condition.
An estimation would be between 100 to 250 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Dear Lauren,
It was made in the United States and was more or less used as a badge of rank in times where firearms dominated the battlefields. In the end, the saber was still a sharp weapon but most likely it was worn as a piece a prestige since on-one-on fights were very rare.
With kind regards,
Georg
Thank you for your response. Can you tell in what country this was made? Would it have been used for fighting or parades or?
Thanks again.
