Scoll's coffee
05 June 2018
Description

It's a Scull's coffee canister. It says "Here you are sir" then trademark on the lid. The glass is uneven and looks to be blown freehand by the pontil mark on the bottom. I haven't been able to find anything out about it

What does this mean?

This is an early 20th century General Store jar for coffee beans; the large glass jar is mold blown glass with pontil mark on the underside. The pressed tin lid advertises for Scull's Coffee and features their butler mascot and Here you are Sir motto. It is rather unusual for an early 20th century General Store jar to be hand blown. If the lid did not fit so well, it may have been considered a marriage of a mid 19th century glass jar with a replaced lid. Scull Coffee and Tea merchants were established in Camden, NJ in 1831. If it were not for the lid with the butler mascot, the jar would be dated earlier. Tracing Scull's advertising campaigns to when the butler mascot was first introduced may help in establishing a more firm time frame. Most of the Scull butler mascot campaigns tend to be be from the 1920s.The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.

What is the height of the jar? Does the tin jar lid have threads? Please also add a photo of the opening of the jar without the lid.

Hey! The jar is 8.5" high. The lid does not have threads. I added some pics to show. Thanks

Do you have any examples of the past auction sales? Where would you recommend listing it? Thank you!

I use a paid subscription database of recorded past auction sales and the estimate is based on comparables, not an an exact match. I recommend trying to consign through a bottle auction. Although this is not technically a bottle, per se, it would fit in to such a sale. If you google Bottle Auctions, there is quite a list of companies specializing in such to choose from.
