Hello,
Your item is a Japanese woodblock print depicting a battle scene, likely from the Edo or Meiji period. The detailed composition, dramatic movement, and expressive figures suggest it may be the work of a well-known ukiyo-e artist, such as Yoshitoshi or Kuniyoshi, both of whom were famous for their depictions of warriors and historical battles. The presence of calligraphic text and labels likely identifies the scene and the characters involved. Given the framing and signs of age, this print appears to be an original, rather than a later reproduction.
The condition of the print shows some aging, including discoloration, which is common in woodblock prints that have been framed for extended periods. The artwork retains strong colors, especially in the blue and red tones, which are characteristic of Meiji-era prints. The composition is dynamic, reflecting the influence of kabuki theater and samurai legend storytelling that was prominent in 19th-century Japan.
Hi, Id like to ask you re write the appraisal for this senso battle painting. You said there was slight damage. In fact, it was some residue on the glass cover that I neglected to clean off. I have since wiped it off and took a new photo. So Please look at photo again and you can see there is no damage.. thanks, Greg
