Set of 5 early 19th century pitchers
The below collection of pitchers came from George Lazelle in Big Rapids, MI. He was a family friend of my great-grandparents and my grandmother and mother referred to him as “Uncle George.” He died in the late 1960s and left this to my grandmother who passed it to my mother. He apparently was childless. Purportedly he told my grandmother that all these pitchers are from his family and date back to the “early 1800s.” Pitcher 1: All brown circular pitcher. The image depicts various animals, such as deer, hog, and rabbit, being hung from a tree as if they are about to be slaughtered. No markings on it. It's glazed and in very, very good condition. Pitcher 2: Painted in brown, green, and white with a glaze, this circular pitcher depicts a cow on each side. On one side, the cow is eating in front of a tree. On the other, the cow is walking under a tree. The glaze has cracks in it. Otherwise, it's in very good condition. No markings on it. Pitcher 3: All white glazed oval pitcher with no design in very good condition. Glaze has cracks in it. A stamp on the bottom reads, "The Wellsville China Co. Wellsville, OH." Pitcher 4: Blue and white circular glazed pitcher of a Dutch windmill, home, and tree on each side. It has a nickel-sized chip on the outer rim by the handle as well as a tiny chip on the spout. Other than that, it is in good condition. No markings on it. Pitcher 5: Whitish-brown circular glazed pitcher. It depicts a tree branch with pink flowers and green leaves on both sides, though the size of the branch, number of flowers, and number of leaves is bigger on one side than the other. The glaze is cracked, and there is some discoloration both inside and outside. Gold trim on handle and on the rim. It has a 3.25-inch vertical crack on one side, which bisects with a 1.25-inch crack about 2.5 inches down the pitcher. A stamp on the bottom appears to show a lion, a coat of arms with a crown, and possibly a unicorn. There is an illegible word followed by the word “WARRANTED”. There is also a tiny chip on the base.
Pitcher 1: 8 inches tall at the highest part of the handle. Opening diameter is 4 inches. Its max width handle to spout is 8.25 inches.Pitcher 2: 7.5 inches tall. Opening diameter is 5.5 inches. Its max width handle to spout is 7.5 inches.Pitcher 3: 7.5 inches tall at the peak of the handle. Opening is 5.5 x 4 inches. Its max width handle to spout is 7.5 inches.Pitcher 4: 7 inches tall. The opening diameter is 4.5 inches. Its max width handle to spout is 6.75 inches. Pitcher 5: 6.5 inches tall. The opening diameter is 3.5 inches. Its max width handle to spout is 6 inches.

American naive pitcher, early 20th Century, of circular section, glazed in brown, green and white and depicting a cow, unmarked. Minor craquelure to glaze but otherwise purported to be in very good condition. 7 1/2 in. tall ($40-60)

A Wellsville Pottery blanc de chine pitcher, early 20th Century, of circular section, without decoration, underside stamped "The Wellsville China Co Wellsville OH. Minor craquelure to glaze but otherwise purported to be in very good condition. 7 1/2 in. tall ($50-75)
Pitcher 4:
Delft-style blue and white pitcher, early 20th Century, of circular section, with blue and white landscape decoration depicting a windmill, unmarked. Chips to outer rim by handle and chip to spout but otherwise purported to be in good condition. 7 in. tall ($25-35)
Pitcher 5:
An English Ironstone Wares parcel gilt pitcher, mid 19th Century, of circular section, with foliate decoration to the beige ground, with factory mark to the underside. Repairs, craquelure to glaze and cracks, as well as a chip to the base. 6 1/2 in. tall ($20-30)

Thanks, Delia, for this information. Can you provide the approximate date of production for each these pitchers individually based on the info provided? You noted they are 19th and 20th, but I am curious which one are from which period. Also, can you provide any information about the factory mark on Pitcher 5? DO you have a guess as to what the unidentifiable word might be and why it says "WARRANTED"?
