Seth thomas walnut grandfather clock. It was purchased in Italy and shipped to the US in August 1985. It is in excellent condition. It has only been moved once. I can not find a clock like it anywhere online. I would like to purchase another clock just like this one if you can find one.
Hi Mark,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Seth Thomas clocks are fairly common - and ones in fairly standard cases typically bring about $500-800 when sold at auction - but the floral inlaid case of this example, which has a swelled or "bombe" base is in the style of earlier Dutch examples from the 18th Century is unusual. While I can't see details in the photos, the proportions suggest this is a 20th Century case, possibly made at the same time as the works were made by Seth Thomas.
It may be difficult to find comparable clocks though you could try to "marry" a Seth Thomas works (again, these are fairly obtainable, both vintage and new) with an existing Dutch style bombe case, which you might be able to find at auction for a few hundred dollars.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage Seth Thomas chiming clock
In a Dutch style floral marquetry case made by IDM, Italy
late 20th Century
The broken swan's neck pediment and bonnet with three finials, tombstone paneled door opening to a cobalt- and cast brass dial with Roman numeral chapter rings, over a waisted case with elongated glazed oculus opening to a pendulum, weights and chimes, over a bombe base on short bun feet. Case with floral marquetry throughout.
