Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It is a beautiful cigarette or cigar box. Such vintage boxes are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The box has silver or silverplate on the outside and on the inside it is with wooden lining. This was typical of these kinds of items in order to keep the tobacco fresh. The marks that you have taken a photo of reads SRGS as far as I can read from the photograph. This is not an indication of the material being silver. However these types of cigarette boxes were almost always made of silver so there may be a stamp or mark somewhere else. Perhaps on the base of or underneath the box.
It is an item that you fairly often see for sale. Today they are mostly used for other things than tobacco however it is a nice item and appears to be in good condition. The estimate is presuming the material is silver. If you do find other marks please send me photos of these and I will be happy to look at them.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online silver auction, where I believe the box has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to your fathers cigarette box. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
Thank you
