Carved Stone Amulet or Blessing Stone
Unknown creation date: possible 2000 years to contemporary time
Believed to be found in the isles of the United Kingdom
Measures: 1.5 cm; no weight given
A river smoothed stone with three rectangular lines carved into the surface. Appears to be a hard blue river stone. The tradition of giving and receiving small blessing stones is found in many cultures, ancient and contemporary. Symbols can mean many things throughout civilization, and can also evolve in their meaning. These small petroglyphs would travel with a person as a symbol of protection or object to focus meditation or prayer. Traditions also exist for leaving carvings as an offering for religious and spiritual blessing. This could explain the gathering of carved stones this example was found within.
From images alone; it is difficult to state the date of creation. The carved lines do appear to be very straight and even cut; leading me to believe the carving was made with contemporary powered tools. But it could be very precise hand-work as well. A magnification on the carved area would be needed.
I suggest contacting a regional anthropology organization, University or museum department to learn more about the history this item may have. Determining an older age would increase the fair market value.
Hello,
I've added 4 new pictures, do let me know if ok. I found this when I was a child at school. I was just digging through the soil at the gardenish area with friends and we found other stones similar, I kept this one.
