Dear Sir/Madam I have a bear that was bought for me when I was little (back in the 60’s) and I’m not sure if it’s a Stieff bear or not. It has no labels but it’s arms, legs and head move and it makes a bear noise when tilted forwards or backwards. It’s approx 18” in Length and approx 7” wide tummy, 14” wide arm to arm. It is a light brown colour with darker brown softer fur paws and nose/mouth. The nose and mouth appear to be hand stitched and I think his eyes are glass. I have attached a picture of it. If you could give me any advice about it I would be very grateful.
It was a gift to me by my godparents
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It is a cute vintage teddybear. Such vintage toys are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The teddybear has a lovely fur colour with 2 tones. It appears to be in good condition. This particular type of bear without a hump on the back and more cuddling than earlier teddys that resembled real bears was popular around the 1950s-1960s.
It is hard to tell who the manufacturer was or where it was made if there are no tags or labels. Steiff teddy bears have a button in the right ear so they are pretty easy to determine. Teddy bears have been very popular for decades/centuries and most toy makers have their own collection of teddy bears to meet the markets demand. Some manufacturers even make limited editions. Mass produced teddy bears rarely have value beyond their purchase price even when kept in excellent shape.
The value of all your teddy bear is determined by the company that made them and how many teddys were made from each lot. Normally these companies produce teddy bears in lots from 1000 and upwards.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online toys auction, where I believe the teddy bear has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the teddybear. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
Thank you
