What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Based on the photographs and description provided, the subject of this appraisal is a Spalding AFL white panel presentation football presented to former University of Louisville football and basketball coach Tom King by AFL President Milt Woodard commemorating Super Bowl I, circa 1967.

The piece is not professionally graded or authenticated, but additional memorabilia (not part of this individual Super Bowl ball's appraisal value, but used for documentation purposes) including a 1964 signed presentation ball was examined and further establishes provenance. The piece was acquired via inheritance.

Establishing a value for a presentation ball from this game without team signatures is difficult, thus comparables include team signed balls from this historic season to account for the significance of the presentation by Woodard of such a piece. Three 1966 Packers team signed footballs have sold within the past three years via Heritage Auctions for $1,680, $2,640, and $3,120 respectively. Unfortunately, the value of those balls is largely in the autographs. Game used (and well-documented with photographic evidence) balls can go in the same range and higher, but this ball is not believed to be game used but instead is a presentation specimen.

Arguably the significance of the owner and its gift from Woodard brings the value on par with that of a team signed ball. The owner would be encouraged to document its history in a notarized letter to accompany the piece were it to be offered for sale.

In consideration of the factors noted, a Fair Market Value (pre-auction estimate) of the Super Bowl presentation ball would be estimated at $1,500 to $3,000.
