Oil painting on cardboard attributed to Sverre Holmsen (1906-1992), a Swedish writer who lived in Tahiti for several years in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The back shows "VARUA TAHITI" (meaning "Spirit of Tahiti" in Tahitian) and is signed "Sverre Holmsen." It is in good condition. The painting is in Estonia and has been with our family for 20 years. It came to us through the Sigtuna-Rakvere sister city aid program where Sigtuna shipped aid here and we found it from those items. We would like to understand if this painting is authentic and potential value.

Hello, this item is an oil painting on cardboard attributed to Sverre Holmsen (1906–1992), a Swedish ethnographer and writer known for his time in Tahiti during the 1920s and 1930s. The title “Varua Tahiti” translates to “Spirit of Tahiti,” and the work depicts a stylized female figure with strong features, painted in a modernist expressionist manner. While Holmsen was primarily recognized as a writer, he was also active in painting, particularly inspired by his years in Polynesia. The presence of his signature on the front and the title inscription on the reverse, combined with provenance linking the painting to Estonia via the Sigtuna–Rakvere sister city aid program, adds a layer of historical and cultural interest.
From a market perspective, Holmsen is not widely collected as a painter, so values remain modest compared to recognized Nordic modernist painters. However, works connected to his Tahitian period carry strong thematic appeal for collectors of Polynesian-inspired art. Considering the dimensions (30 × 30 cm), medium, and provenance, the fair market value would likely fall between $600 and $1,200.
