This piece appears to be in fairly good condition. All the dirt and grime appear authentic but the colors are still fairly bright.I think the piece is painted on cotton. I acquired this piece at a garbage facility. A 70 year old gentleman was throwing away boxes and boxes of items from the 1840s. I would really love some more information on the item. I am extremely intrigued that this came to me in my life. would you be able to explain to me the meaning or teaching that is the subject matter of this item? I would also really love to know where it’s from, and the time period of which it was painted. hopefully you’ll be able to help me with this beautiful saved treasure!

Hello Tory,
Thank you for choosing Mearto for your online appraisal and for your patience.
Based on the images and information you provided, this item is:
A remarkable Thanga Painting (18 1/2“ x 26 1/2“) depicting the descend of Maitreya Sutra from god realm following the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition. According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya is a bodhisattva who is prophesied to appear on Earth, achieve complete Enlightenment, and teach the Dharma. According to scriptures, Maitreya's teachings will be similar to those of Gautama Buddha (also known as Śākyamuni Buddha). The arrival of Maitreya is prophesied to occur during an era when the teachings of Gautama Buddha have been forgotten by most of the terrestrial world.
Based on the style of this painting, it looks like it belongs to late 19th century Southeastern Asia.
Thangka paintings are important tools to depict Buddha and his teachings as well as that of other deities and bodhisattvas
