This painting was the property of my uncle. A priest serving in parishes in Oklahoma and Texas, during the 60's 70's and 80's. It was obtained after his passing. It's entitled "The Glorified Christ". It's signed by the painter, Reverend John Liwalch or L. Walch. It's hard to see the exact spelling. There appears to be a number 22 after his name, but I'm not positive. There are a few places with scuffing or spots of paint missing, but I'm unsure which is the case. On the reverse side, a number 1 appears in the top left corner and there's a circled number 6 next to a card that states: "The Glorified Christ" Liquitex acrylic painting 35 3/4" x 22 3/4" price$350.00. It's framed, on canvas. There's a cloth border immediately next to the painting and it's surrounded by a wooden design frame. There's a number stamped on the back of the frame: No. 253. Also on the reverse side, there's a note in pencil: This picture has been painted and varnished with LIQUITEX acrylic paints. To clean surface, simply use a damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild soap. Since we've possessed this since around 1986, it has never been displayed or attempted to be cleaned, only stored. I've enclosed a number of pictures for examination. Are religious paintings valuable, is this artist of any known talent and are any of his pieces, including this one, collectible or hold any value? Beyond the painting, does the frame have any value?
It was owned by my uncle, Reverend Joseph Mazaika. Any previous ownership or history is unknown.
Dear Tim,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few better and focused images of the surface to judge the technique of this artwork properly.
With kind regards,
Georg
Dear Tim,
Thank you for the additional images and your patience.
The apprised object appears to be a gouache drawing on paper or cardboard with the measurements of 35 3/4" x 22 3/4". It has the title "The Glorified Christ" and was made by Rev. John L. Walch. Sadly no artist with such a name is mentioned in auction result lists or similar reference books.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 50 to 100 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
Hi Georg, I added some closeups, as requested. Thank-you, Tim
