An antique Murano chalcedony and aventurine bottle vase made by Lorenzo Radi (1803-1874), Murano, Venice, Italy, mid 19th Century
16 December 2024
Description

As I am a collector of fine Murano glass decorative art, it happened to find and win at an online auction, from Italy, this impressive and historical bottiglia in vetro calcedonio. It is as unique as it is noted on the top of the inside rim a signature followed by the letters R A D I. Also it is the first Murano chalcedony glass that we ever seen with several bubbles inside that resamble solid gold like different size beads. Maybe it is an amber glass layer over the bubble, I do not know for sure because in reality it really looks and feels like solid gold. It is in almost perfect condition with no chips.

What does this mean?

Hi George,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Lorenzo Radi (1803-1874) was a pivotal figure in the history of Murano glassmaking, active during the 19th century. Known for his innovative contributions, Radi played a significant role in reviving the ancient techniques of Murano glass that had begun to fade over time. His works are best known for their use of chalcedony, as exemplified in this bottle vase. He also revived the aventurine glassmaking technique, which involves embedding metallic particles (typically copper) in the glass, creating a sparkling, glittering effect and are what I think you are seeing in the gold bubbles.

It's worth noting that Lorenzo Radi's son, also Lorenzo (1853-1928) also specialized in chalcedony and mosaic glass but I think this is the work of the father rather than the son.

When the senior Lorenzo Radi's works come to auction, they typically sell between € 2,500-4,500 and I would expect this to perform similarly if auctioned in a sale that featured more pieces of Murano glass.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
