This is a hand carved wooden Mbra sculpture of a monkey with bowl that was produced by the Baule Tribe for a Gbekre ritual. These figures are referred to as divination statues and the bowl is used for offerings. The Baule Tribe is from the Ivory Coast, between Bandana River and Nzi River in grasslands on the Continent of Africa. The Gbekre ritual is considered a trance divination practice. The Mbra monkey figures were kept away from the general tribe members, and women were not permitted to see the figures. The intention of the ritual offerings to the Mbra was to ensure success in war. The estimate is based on actual past auction sales of comparables.
