I have a pair of two coat of arms paintings that I purchased at an estate sale in Atlanta. They look like gouache paintings. They have old writing (painted) on them. I tried to translate the old writing using various apps, but was not successful. One has a two men on them and the men have dark skin, maybe African. The other has a Phoenix or dragon figure, with a shield with a snake. This one also has antique writing painted on it, which I was also not able to translate. They have very nice matching frames with a silk pale green mat.
The frame and the image together measures 8 5/8" wide x 10 5/8" tall. The image with the shield measures (at the bold black line) are 4 1/4 wide x 5 3/4" tall. The image with the men measures (at the bold black line) are 3 5/16" wide x 5 3/4" tall.
hello, this item is a pair of heraldic paintings executed in gouache on laid or parchment-like paper, likely from a German-speaking region and dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. Each painting features a detailed coat of arms topped by elaborate crests one with a crowned dragon or phoenix rising and the other with what appears to be a noble family’s supporters, possibly depicting African figures, a motif not uncommon in certain European heraldic traditions. The script is rendered in Fraktur or Kurrent, historic forms of German handwriting, and may reference family names or mottos, though legibility requires specialized paleographic review. The artworks are framed with pale green silk matting in gilded frames, contributing to their overall preservation and aesthetic presentation.
Coats of arms like these were often part of genealogical documents, armorials, or commission pieces for noble or bourgeois families. Similar gouache heraldic miniatures are moderately collectible, especially if identifiable to a specific lineage. While unsigned and lacking verifiable provenance, the finely rendered imagery and period character lend decorative and scholarly interest. As a pair, these works carry a fair market value of approximately USD 400–600.
