Item consists of wooden posts, chrome, and leather. The stitched leather is attached to the chrome frame. No identifying marks or tags that would suggest designer or manufacturer. Height 32" Width 28.5" Depth 32" Did an extensive google search but only found one result of the same chair, describing it as a Maurice Burke safari lounge chair. While similar to some Burke features, couldn't confirm and assumed it might be a mis-attribution. http://ladukeantiques.blogspot.com/2011/09/arkana-lounge-chairs-by-maurice-burke.html These were some of the closest styles I came across: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/lounge-chairs/brazilian-lounge-chair-brown-alcantara/id-f_17063291/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwsYb0BRCOARIsAHbLPhHrSHo6IRr41Ih3o_H2pjl0Ic3LOOtlPXChsm7sxvXwiixUaeWA5R0aAoi_EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/lounge-chairs/pierre-paulins-f-444-easy-chair-patinated-cognac-leather/id-f_17312162/ http://www.sputnikmodern.com/chairs/pair-of-large-leather-sling-chairs https://www.vntg.com/98296/safari-chair-by-maurice-burke-for-arkana/ https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/lounge-chairs/sergio-rodrigues-kilin-lounge-chair-rosewood-leather/id-f_15973561/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwsYb0BRCOARIsAHbLPhHQcWfoJ30nDBfhKkYFuDy_KPtzkC_Fs9wPjnaMNjfDkItEBH5nyioaAlGTEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Purchased from a collector in Maryland. He had originally purchased it from an estate sale in Pennsylvania. Collector knew nothing more than what I currently know about the chair.
Good morning, John,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please add a photograph of the front of the chair, taken straight on, as well as one of the front of the chair from a slight angle, similar to how the two chairs in the LaDuke Antiques photo are angled?
Thanks!
Delia

Thanks, John, for the additional photos.
As the links you've included attest, the sling style with chrome tubing and leather seating was quite popular among MidCentury Modern designers; without a label/tag/brand/stamp etc, this chair can't be while I think your chair to be SIMILAR to the "Safari" chair Maurice Burke designed for Arkana, I do not think it is one of those (I also do not think that the chairs in the LaDuke Antiques ad are Maurice Burke "Safari" chairs for Arkana) I've found a few auction sales of those chairs - the links and prices realized are towards the end of this response.
It's important to keep in mind that websites like 1stDibs are retail sites, so the prices quoted are higher (often considerably so) than the auction values Mearto provides.
Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A Mid-Century Modern Leather & Chrome Sling Armchair
Unattributed, mid 20th Century
Height 32", Width 28 1/2", Depth 32"
PROVENANCE: Originally from a Pennsylvania estate
$150-250 *
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price (such as seen on 1stDibs, Replacements, eBay, Etsy, Chairish or Rubylane) may vary. The following recent auction sales of comparable items have been used to research the value of your chair:

Thank you Delia. Can you clarify this sentence for me:
"As the links you've included attest, the sling style with chrome tubing and leather seating was quite popular among MidCentury Modern designers; without a label/tag/brand/stamp etc, this chair can't be while I think your chair to be..."
Not sure if this is suggesting that it IS from MCM-period or that it is a contemporary take on the popular style.
I was really hoping that Mearto experts would be helpful in finding out more information on this chair, beyond what I was already able to find online (ie similar chairs, styles, and auction/merchant prices). Some questions I've been focused on were whether the use of chrome and wood was particular to a certain designer, market, or region - or - especially whether it is common or rarer to find a chair that has little to no known existence online.
The following line from Mearto's website was what motivated me to get the item evaluated ('background information'):
"We also explain how we arrived at the estimated value and provide some background information about your item."
Thank you.
John
My apologies; that sentence should have read "As the links you've included attest, the sling style with chrome tubing and leather seating was quite popular among MidCentury Modern designers; without a label/tag/brand/stamp etc, this chair can't be FIRMLY ATTRIBUTED TO A SPECIFIC MAKER. WHILE... I think your chair to be SIMILAR to the "Safari" chair Maurice Burke designed for Arkana, I do not think it is one of those...
Your chair shows sufficient signs of wear and use to reasonably expect it to have been made in the mid-20th Century. It's 'possible' it was made later but without additional information I have no reason to think this chair is a later reproduction.
The links to the auction sales of comparable chairs show the valuation process taken with your chair. Such links are typically the manner in which we demonstrate evidence of research.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Hi Delia,
Do you have any suggestions on where I can continue to research this chair, who made it, where it came from, and from what decade it is from?
Hi John,
You might send photographs of your chairs to Wright (Chicago) or Rago (Lambertville NJ) auction houses; they specialize in mid 20th century design and would likely have seen all variations of Maurice Burke chairs. Both typically offer authentication services.
Delia
Thank you! Will follow those leads
Hi Delia - response from a specialist at Wright:
Hey John,
Thank you for reaching out. Having a tough time on my end lining up the details but I think it could very well be maurice burke based on the form and examples that not only you have shared but that we have offered before. I wish I had more helpful news for you but I am coming up empty on my end.
From a specialist at another auction house:
Thanks for your email. What a great chair! Offhand, I don't know it but can see the attribution to Maurice Burke, though it struck me as Scandinavian at first. I also see similarities to Jerry Johnson's work.
I found a facebook page for Arkana - maybe you could write them and send images? [Sending now]
Glad to see you are getting some feedback.
Contacted a dealer who had same chair. They confirmed that it was a rare Maurice Burke chair produced for Arkana in the 1970s, per a catalog their friend was in possession of.
That's good to hear. Did any of the auction houses you reached out to give you a different valuation than I did? I realize $150-250 may seem low (the dealer you just mentioned may have his listed for several hundred if not a few thousand dollars but keep in mind thats a retail price.) If you go to sell this at auction, having a conservative estimate will generate more interest, which often translates into a higher selling price...
Thank you for the response. I didn't ask any of the auction houses for an estimate, just any knowledge regarding the chair itself. It did generate lots of interest with the specialists I did share it with, but unfortunately had not been anything that they had come across yet. Hope to continue tracking down anymore information re: chair and its original catalog feature
*Also dealer had sold his years ago and did not list a price. Just asked if he remembered the item and had any additional info re: it!
Photos added! (Don’t know how I missed the straight-on picture).
Apologies, uploads from phone seem to have come out rotated.
