18"x18" watercolor. Possible Basquiat work
Unknown
Hi Whit,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Basquiat signature is typically spelled out rather than the use of initials but an expert on Basquiat would be able to confirm the frequency of a monogram. His watercolors have brought prices at auction ranging from $3,000-950,000 but his untitled "head" pictures are among his most popular so it's good to have this examined first-hand.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
Style of Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988)
Untitled head
watercolor
18 by 18 inches
appears to be in good condition
PROVENANCE: acquired from a private seller
$10,000-15,000*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
Thanks, Whit. I've given this the benefit of the doubt but it's good that you hare having it examined firsthand. You might also get second opinions from Sotheby's and Phillips, both of whom have sold Basquiat's works well.
A private individual who was selling it. He wasn't an art dealer per se but does sell art work but not exclusively. He was totally unaware of the artist and never purported it as a possibility. It either is or is not but no one has claimed it is from the artist so with that in consideration please make the evaluation. No one is trying to pass a fake. If not I have already made arrangements to take it to Christie's in south Florida but I thought maybe you could come to some idea however I don't know your organization and would not trust a comparative analysis. The painting was sold for less than$100. Please make a general evaluation assuming that it was not created to be a forgery.
