It is a picture of a field of trees in blossom with a mountain in the background. It is signed in the lower left corner “Hakamada 1937”
Neighbor gave this to my grandfather in his will. The story behind the painting was that it was a gift given to General Douglas McArthur after the the end of WWII, and McArthur gave it to our neighbor. Not sure how much of this story is true or not.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a japanese painting depicting a landscape scene in spring, dated 1937 or twelfth year fourth month of the 昭和 Shōwa period and signed Hakamada. Unfortunately the artist remains unknown, paintings by this artist are not actively offered or sold at the moment. Any proof of provenance would increase the value, but without it this would be just a very decorative painting in the western style by a lesser known japanese artist or talented amateur artist. The estimate is based on similar sold at auction. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the item.
