Untitled 1980

Description

Painting number 2 by Cuban artist Humberto Dionisio. The medium is acrylic, spray paint and dayglo on paper. This is almost an identical twin to the previous painting I submitted. It has two figures instead of 3. It was purchased from James Kitchens in Miami in 2001. Mr. Kitchens inherited Mr. Dionisio's works after his passing in 1987.

What does this mean?

Dear Walter Balan,

Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is a mixed media painting (acrylic, spray paint, and dayglo) on paper. It is signed and dated to the lower right, and therefore attributable to Humberto Dionisio (Cuban, 1950-1987). The work is a street art style figural composition from 1980. It appears to be in good condition with no visual issues to note, and measures 22 x 34 inches. According to the information provided, the work's provenance can be directly traced back to the artist through the collection of James Kitchens.

Humberto Dionisio graduated from Havana's National School of Design, and was a prominent local poster artist. In 1980, Dionisio arrived in Miami, Florida to escape government censorship. From the mid-80s onwards, Dionisio garnered attention in the Miami art scene for his paintings, however his career was cut short at the time of his death just a few years later. Dionisio worked in various media including paintings, sculpture, and graphic design. Despite his work being collected in museums such as the Smithsonian, Dionisio's work has never been presented at auction. Without an auction record, the work and artist's Fair Market Value remains an ambiguous estimate based on general stylistic trends, time period, and media. Many of the artist's works are for sale through the website managed by Mr. Kitchens, however, commercial prices are not directly related to Fair Market Value as they do not reflect buyer interest, market demand, and so forth. For these reasons, we have used trends in mixed media, street art style, and time period to evaluate a FMV estimate between $200 and $500.

Thank you for your appraisal submission. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.

Kind regards,
Charlotte B.

The appraisal seems pretty low. A similar painting by the artist is currently for sale at $2,500 and is smaller.

Dear Walter Balan,

As expressed in the appraisal report, commercial sales do not reflect secondary market value as they do not reflect buyer interest or artist auction records. As we stated in the report, due to the lack of a secondary record for this artist, the appraisal instead must rely on less concise factors such as the market trends of style, age, and media.
