19th century artist, 243 cm x 197 cm, oil painting on canvas
no idea
Dear Gaetano,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. The apprised object appears to be a painting made in oil on canvas with the measurements of 197 x 243 cm. The painting depicts the theme of the "Triumph of Gambrinus". Gambrinus is the cultural hero of the beer brewing and comparable to Bachhus for wine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambrinus). he is depicted as a king sitting on a large-sized barrel of beer. This painting is not signed but probably made in Austria or Germany in the middle of the 19th century. Sadly the flag behind Gambrinus does not lead to a closer localization. It reminds in composition and style of works of the Austrian artist Hans MAKART (1840-1884) and his circle. An attribution needs further research and a scientifical argumentation.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 4.000 to 6.000 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
