Dear Ram Prakash Singh,
Thank you for the appraisal submission. The work is a contemporary ink drawing on paper by Chittrovanu Mazumdar (Indian, b. 1956). An untitled work, it depicts a stylized, monochrome figure. The work is signed and dated to 2012 to the lower right, and is additionally accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Gallery Kolkata. The work is in Fair condition with staining or foxing to the sheet. It measures 21 x 15 inches.
Mazumdar was born in 1956 in Paris to a family well-connected in the arts. He graduated from the Government College in Kolkata in 1981 with a First Class in Painting and then continued on to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Although he has an extensive exhibition record, there are not many secondary market sales. There are multiple sales at Christie's and Sotheby's but most of these occurred in the early 2000s. A recent sale in 2018 sold much lower than previous sales at a hammer price 92% lower than the estimate. Additionally, these works are stylistically different from the subject work, and it is common for drawings to be estimated lower than the paintings by an artist. With these records, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $500 and $1000.
Thank you for your appraisal submission.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
