Hi Brian,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Murano glass originates from the island of Murano, where Venetian authorities relocated glassmakers in 1291 to reduce fire risk in Venice and protect trade secrets. Over the following centuries, Murano became Europe’s premier center for fine glass production, with artisans developing advanced techniques such as cristallo (exceptionally clear glass), lattimo (milk glass), intricate millefiori patterns, and elaborate gold-leaf and enamel decoration. By the Renaissance, Murano glassmakers were renowned across courts of Europe, producing both functional vessels and highly decorative objects that reflected Venice’s wealth and global trade connections. Guild secrecy helped preserve technical knowledge within families for generations, fostering remarkable continuity of craftsmanship.

Despite periods of decline in the 18th and 19th centuries due to political upheaval and industrial competition, Murano experienced revival in the 20th century, blending traditional methods with modern design. Its enduring legacy lies in its continuous innovation, technical mastery, and the preservation of one of the world’s oldest living glassmaking traditions.

Figures such as dancers, soldiers and clowns were popular subjects and provided glass artisans the perfect vehicle for demonstrating their talents; as such, many different makers made similar clown figures. Unless they are signed or labeled by the maker, it's often hard to distinguish one studio (maker) from another.

Looking at unattributed Murano clowns that have come to auction recently (last 12 months), most are selling for fair-market prices ranging from $20-50 depending on size. Given that yours is of medium size, it would likely sell for between $30 and $40 if offered in a well-publicized auction with a global bidding platform.

Note that this will be lower than a retail price, which should be in the $75-100 range. If you list this for sale privately, you should start high so you can come down if you don't get any buyers and, so, avoid the risk of underselling this.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
