Hi Louis,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Giuseppe Chiarolanza (1864–1920) was an Italian painter renowned for his evocative landscapes and genre scenes, particularly those depicting the natural beauty of the Naples region. Born on March 17, 1864, in Miano, a district of Naples, Chiarolanza studied at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples from 1881 under the mentorship of landscape painter Alfonso Simonetti. He developed a keen interest in capturing the essence of nature, with a particular focus on trees and wooded landscapes. His works often portrayed the interplay of light and shadow, showcasing his skill in rendering atmospheric effects. Chiarolanza's debut was at the 1880 exhibition of the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti in Naples, where he presented "Bosco di Capodimonte – Studio dal vero," highlighting his commitment to painting en plein air.
When Chiarolanza's watercolors of this size come to auction, they usually sell for between $400-600 but the unframed condition - with some small edge losses, brings the value down to $300-500.
