Description

Oil on canvas. H28. 2cm, L38. 7cm

Provenance

Flemish ? Old oil painting on board – label to back Flemish? painting which has been painted on canvas and then laid to fiberboard(very unprofessional job - now removed from this board because starting deformation) at some stage and shows figures near a dwelling and church spire in the distance. There is no sign of any signature that I can see. The painting is housed in a frame which is not original to it, but still has some age. Back of the painting has a Dutch label for BOEKBINDERIJ INLIJSTINGEN – H. NEEVEN PERSOONSTRAAT, No. 8. So by the looks of it, the painting was re-framed many years ago. It looks to be a very old painting, possibly early 1800’s or before which has been originally removed from a stretcher and then stuck to a board. Nicely painted. Condition: The painting is dirty . Some little areas of the canvas have bubbled up or raised up and formed some paint cracking / losses. Looks like there are a few little holes too and a little tear on the roof of the house, however it has been steadied by it being mounted to board. It is a nice original antique oil painting, just needs a clean and possibly a more suitable frame. Current frame has a lot of chipping and losses, scoring and is grubby / dusty from age, painting may benefit from being reframed. Measures approx. 17 ¾” wide by 14” high and 14 ¾” by 10 ½” visible painting size.

What does this mean?

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal and the detailed information you provided. This appears to be a dutch painting of the early to mid 19th century, cut from the stretcher and laid down on board. Sometimes, if a painting is damaged, some owners tend to cut down the painting in size instead of having it restored. This might have been the case here. The quality of the painting is rather provincial but the overall impression is pleasing. The painting has repoussoir motifs to the left and right which give the painting some depth and perspective. The estimate is based on similar paintings offered or sold at auction
