P. Dubois bronze sculpture.
Michigan, USA
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a late 20th century chinese bronze / pot metal statue on marble base, depicting a winged female with a sword on a cornucopia, bearing a dremel engraved signature "P. Dubois".
Which is in fact a copy of the scultpure "La Paix" (Peace) by Jules Felix Coutan.
Identical modern reproductions are currently available for approx. 1200 USD.
As a modern reproduction, with the wrong signature applied, meant to deceive the buyer, I have to call it a forgery of no art market value. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the item.
Depends. If the seller told you that this is a pot metal ( not necessarily bronze alloy but similar) statue manufactured in China on the basis of photos, bearing a false signature and you paid the price for a decorative home decor item, you would be ok. If the seller told you that this is an antique statue by Paul DUBOIS (1829-1905) you were ripped off. The good thing is you can ask for advice before you buy. So please use our service the next time you are planning a purchase.
I paid $750 for a 62 lb bronze statue on a marble base including stand. So I guess my question is if it is a reproduction was that a good deal or not?
That is ok, not overpaid. A near identical reproduction ( with the right name) is currently on offer for 1200 USD plus shipping.
So you are saying it’s a reproduction or a forgery? I was ripped off? It is solid bronze and very heavy, probably 60-80lbs at least.
