Hello, your item is a hand-carved ivory elephant stand and concentric puzzle ball, a fine example of intricate craftsmanship likely produced in the mid-20th century, particularly in Hong Kong or southern China, where such carvings were popular. These items were highly sought after in the export market, especially during the mid-20th century, and were often sold as luxury souvenirs to Western travelers.
Historical Context: Ivory puzzle balls originated as traditional Chinese carvings, known for their incredible technical complexity. Skilled artisans would carve multiple layers of freely moving spheres within one solid ivory block. The elephant base, symbolizing strength and wisdom, often accompanied such balls as a sign of good fortune.
Material and Design: The piece features an intricately carved ball with 4–5 internal layers (as observed), with delicate floral and geometric designs. The base includes three standing elephants supporting the ball, a common motif in Chinese ivory art. The ivory exhibits a smooth patina, consistent with age, suggesting the piece has been well-preserved.
Market Value: Due to international bans on the sale of ivory, particularly post-1989 (CITES regulations), the trade in ivory is heavily restricted, and values vary greatly depending on provenance and legality. While historic significance enhances its value, legal hurdles significantly limit resale options.
Estimated Value: $300–$600 USD. This figure reflects its age, craftsmanship, and the market restrictions on ivory. For private ownership, it is best valued as a collectible rather than for resale.
Please ensure compliance with local laws regarding ivory ownership and trade.
