Hi JT,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Gorham Manufacturing Company was a leading American silversmith founded in 1831 in Providence. Renowned for sterling and electroplated wares, it supplied luxury goods and mass-market tableware, blending craftsmanship with industrial production. Gorham produced the official trophies for events like the America's Cup. Its Martelé line (1897–1912) exemplified Art Nouveau artistry. Acquired by Textron in 1967, Gorham remains a significant name in American decorative arts and collecting.
Gorham was one of the first American firms to successfully combine large-scale mechanized production with high artistic standards. While many competitors leaned one way or the other, Gorham did both—producing affordable electroplate alongside museum-quality sterling.
The Camellia pattern was introduced in 1941. The pattern was distinguished by its graceful, sculptural handle ending in a stylized camellia blossom, which was very much in keeping with the softer, organic design trends of the early 1940s. Despite being launched during World War II (when silver production was somewhat constrained), it became one of Gorham’s enduring mid-20th-century patterns and remained popular for decades.
What you are calling butter knives are actually entree or dinner knives.
The price of silver is at an all time high (along with gold and some other precious metals) so auction prices are a bit inflated at the moment (and I'd need the weight of solid silver pieces -excluding knives and the slide which have stainless steel blades - in ounces for a current melt-weight value) but when other sets of Gorham Camellia flatware of similar size have come to auction, they have historically sold in the $5,000-7,000 range.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
