Dear Bonnie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be an etching print on paper with measurements of 12 x 24 inches. This print was made after a painting with the title "Divorce" done by William Holdbrook BEARD (1824-1900) which was sold in 2008 by Sotheby´s in New York. This painting and the print depict a divorce scene between a couple in front of a notary or court. William Holdbrook Beard often showed monkeys or other animals in typical all-day situations of humans. This caricaturesque change between animal and human has a long tradition in art even reaching back to Egyptian art. Beard did not make or published prints by himself. Some paintings of him were published as prints by Currier & Ives (American, active New York, 1857–1907). The known prints were lithographs and not etching like in this case so it is not clear if Currier & Ives published this etching. This piece was probably made in the last third of the 19th century.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 400 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
