19 3/4" x 27" watercolor.
My mother, Barbara Jo Kahabka Tumbiolo. Prior to her it belonged to my grandmother, Mary Kate Barnes Kahabka who I was told purchased it at an art show in Auburn, NY in the mid to late 60's, possibly early 70's.
This is a vintage, 20th century, original framed watercolor painting of a view of a town in a valley, as seen from a higher perspective through a wooded area and showing mountains in the far distance in the background. It is stated as being by William Lester Stevens (1888 - 1969); however the signature on this is not readily visible in the images here. Stevens was born in Rockport, Massachusetts and he studied art under Parker Perkins. In 1917 he joined the Army to fight in World War I, after returning to his home town, in 1921 he was instrumental in bringing together a large group of artists to form the Rockport Art Association. Without a notation, title, or even a date for the year painted, the setting of this view cannot be definitively stated. This is more than likely a local view in Massachusetts, where he did paint most of his works, as opposed to Italy. The artist has a very long and strong history of past sales at auction and it is clear he was quite prolific. Although he was a American Watercolor Society, the majority of his works are done in oil. Collectors pay the highest prices for his Rockport marine views, or scenes of boats in docks and bays. Watercolors sell for less than oils, in general. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
I have a painting by Mary Barnes Kahabka. It is a painting of an Alaskan native and a baby. The native is Nina Corupine an artist. Would love more info on Mary. My email is [email protected].
