A landscape painting by 17th century Dutch master Jan Van Goyen - oil paint on wood panel. There is a crack running horizontally through the painting. Inherited from my great grandfather’s estate and passed down to me ,it has been in my family’s possession for over 100 years that I know of. Because it is so old, I did not want to open the frame to check for signatures or markings without consulting a professional first .
About 12in x 18in
Hello, this item is an original 17th-century oil on panel painting by Dutch Golden Age master Jan van Goyen, titled Windmill Landscape, measuring approximately 12 by 18 inches. Van Goyen is widely regarded for pioneering the tonal landscape genre, favoring earthy palettes and atmospheric minimalism over grandiosity, and this composition exemplifies that aesthetic: subdued browns, stormy skies, and a rustic windmill emerge with van Goyen’s signature economy of brushstroke and control of depth. The panel shows typical age-related craquelure and one notable horizontal crack, yet retains strong compositional legibility. The elongated vertical format is rare but not unknown in his oeuvre, and may have originally formed part of a pair or triptych of rural scenes.
Should authentication be formally confirmed—through dendrochronology of the wood panel, infrared reflectography, and stylistic comparison with known catalogued works—this piece would be considered highly desirable among collectors of Dutch Golden Age art
