Woman holding baby painting
5ft x 3ft approx
Butterfields
Dear Hervé,
Thank you for your help and patience.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with 3 feet x 5 feet measurements. The painting depicts a kneeling bare-breasted woman in a black dress from the 19th century holding a dead baby on her knees. She cries and her face expresses sadness. This is not a classical antique or biblically iconography. This painting depicts an unknown scene from a book or other text or could generally thematize the theme of infant death. It was made in the middle of the 19th century. On the reverse side, it is noted with "La Haye" (The Hague) in French language and the name "M. van Randwijk". In te upper right of the painting it is monogrammed with A.N. and dated 1889. Sadly no additional information for an artist with this name fitting in style and motif is given by reference books and databases. This artist was academically educated.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and no severe damage is visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 400 to 800 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Gregory
