World War 2 Japanese sword

Description

My late father in law in Taiwan was given this sword by a Japanese military man in 1945 in Taiwan when the Japanese occupied Taiwan and my father in law was a small boy. He gave it to me in 2014 before he died and l don’t wish to keep it any longer.

A beautiful finely decorated and hand-carved gold short sword in style of Meji period (probably late 19th century) with incised scrimshaw figures. This type of swords were produced extensively during WWII.

In addition, the traditional Clay Tempering method was used on this blade. Clay tempering method is to apply clay on the spine of the blade, and mainly tempering the edge. This results a hardened edge and softened spine, makes it ideal for cutting.
