I am not sure who or when this mask was made. I picked it up at an estate sale and the previous owners had lots of other antique and newish African artifacts, baskets, masks, vases and more. I picked up this Yaka Mask and a Holo Mask.

Hello, this item is a Yaka mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo, associated with the Yaka people, known for their dramatic and elongated features. This mask shows the typical vertical composition, with a high crest, geometric nose, and stylized eyes. The surface reveals applied pigment and wear consistent with handling and ceremonial use. Yaka masks like this are often used in initiation ceremonies and represent ancestral spirits, combining spiritual and social functions.
The market for African tribal masks remains strong, especially for authentic, well-preserved pieces with traditional use. Yaka masks vary in price depending on age, condition, and provenance. Based on comparable sales, this mask, if authenticated as a genuine ceremonial piece rather than a later reproduction, could range between 1,500 and 3,000 USD.
