Young man in Grey painting or copy by Abraham Raguineau
24 December 2025
Description

It is in fair condition. My grandmother is related to the Churchill family of Winston Churchill lineage. Her maiden name is Churchill. She was often mailed paintings and gifts from her family in Europe and this was one of them. She was from a high class family in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The family story was that it was a portrait of the Duke of Marlborough whom we are also related to but I have since found it is the ‘man in grey’. It had its original framing but my mother regrettably had removed the framing about ten years ago.

What does this mean?

Hello, this item is an oil portrait on canvas depicting a young man dressed in grey with a white collar and voluminous sleeves, executed in a restrained palette and sober composition characteristic of Northern European portrait painting of the 17th century. The pose, costume, and treatment of the face relate closely to Dutch and Flemish portrait traditions from circa 1630 to 1660, with stylistic affinities to artists working in the circle of Rembrandt and his contemporaries rather than to a specific named master. While the title references Abraham Raguineau, there is no visible signature or documentary evidence in the images to support an attribution to that painter, and the work is more accurately described as a period style portrait or a later copy after a 17th century model. The oval format and subdued background suggest the work was intended as a domestic portrait rather than an official court commission.

The condition is fair overall, with visible surface wear, paint losses around the edges, abrasion, and an aged varnish layer that dulls the tonal contrast. The canvas and stretcher appear old, but without conservation reports it is not possible to confirm originality of all components. The removal of the original frame does not affect attribution but does impact presentation value. The family provenance is interesting but does not constitute verifiable documentation linking the sitter to the Churchill or Marlborough lineage. Comparable 17th century style portraits by anonymous hands or later workshop copies of this scale typically sell between 2,000 and 4,000 USD depending on condition and aesthetic quality.
