Dimensions: 74" X 27" X 31.5" (L x D x H). Very old and unique piece. Made of Oak.
My dad's grandmother owned it in 1934. Where she got it he doesn't know.
This is an antique 16th century, early to mid 1500's, Henry VIII era, Tudor style, English 2-plank oak top and 5 linen fold panel coffer or chest with original hardware. This is not as old as the 14th century, or 1300's, yet it is still quite old. Italian Renaissance furniture is distinctly more ornate than English Tudor style. A 'press' furniture piece is usually taller cabinet and mostly from Holland. This is a larger than usual coffer that has managed to survive time and natural elements. The impressioned initials TD were of one of the original owners who had marked marked their objects, which done as inventory especially for travel purposes. The linenfold surface decoration was a popular wood carvers folly decoration on furniture and walls at that time. There appears to be a old repair or update to the area just below the lock, as the top of the carved panel decoration does not align. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
