Don’t Know
Hi Chris,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
There is something unusual about this: Robert Barker was the London printer in 1585 and as extant copies of the Holy Bible he printed are quite scarce, they are typically priced in the low six-figures by booksellers around the word.
However, the Christopher Barker who printed this may be a son or grandson who followed the 1585 typeface and font of the text but the front page has a different look and related volumes I'm finding on the usual antiquarian bookseller websites are priced $1,000-2,500; yours has a value of $1,800-$2,200.
My valuation is conditional pending further examination.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
[HOLY BIBLE]
with both Old and New Testaments
Printed in London by Christopher Barker, dated 1585
With embossed leather bindings, stamped "1585" on the spine
CONDITION: This book appears to be in good condition; value assumes no repairs or page losses.
PROVENANCE: Acquired at a flea market
$ 1,800-2,200*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
